Submerged Arc Welding, SAW or Sub-arc as it is called, is a semi-automatic welding process used principally on large welded structures, typically of thicker materials and for heavy components.

The welded components, being very large, usually cannot be moved, so the welding process and equipment move over the joints to do the welding.

As a result, welding positions are limited to the flat position and horizontal positions.
