Heating of the joint during the welding process, and the speed of its subsequent cooling, introduces many localized stress into the structure, that can be harmful These stresses can lead to joint cracking, distortion and brittleness of the welded joint or associated parent material, and therefore heating and cooling needs to be properly managed.
